Down the road from this visitor center is the Cottonwood Springs campground and also a few trails. Older kids should have no problem hiking the Mastodon Peak Loop Trail. At 2.6 miles, it is not too long and has some fun geology. There is even a small gold mine, the Mastodon Mine.

Very helpful rangers at Cottonwood Visitor Center off Interstate 10. The Cottonwood Visitor Center is located 9mi inside the South Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park which is just north of Interstate 10 and about 25mi east of Indio. This visitor center is actually located 32mi south of the North Entrance near Twentynine Palms. There is little reason to stop here due to the indefinite closing of the very worthwhile trails that start near this visitor center; Cottonwood Springs, Mastodon Peak and Lost Palm Oasis, unless one is entering from the south or camping at the nearby Cottonwood Campground which remains open. This is the desert. Be prepared. Bring lots of water.

Explore Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge

Located east of Palm Springs near Palm Desert, Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge covers 3,709 acres. The Coachella Valley Preserve System was designed to protect an endemic, threatened reptile, the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard. These lizards are found on the sand dunes that are located on the southern edge of the Coachella Valley. The CNLM Preserve also preserve the Thousand Palms Canyon.

Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge

A rare resource in the desert, the water feeds the majestic California fan palm which creates a cool and shady respite from the hot summer sun. Wide sweeps of desert wash, dotted with smoke tree and indigo bush, feed into the oasis, and around the oasis lie the rare desert wetlands, lined with arrow weed, willows, cattails, and cottonwoods.

There are bridges to cross and ponds to look at and take pictures. There were a lot of friendly people having fun there and we even had some strangers take some pictures of us standing next to some crazy looking trees!

The CNLM Preserve gates are open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from May through September and from 7:00 am to 5:00 p.m. October through April.

Achtung Baby! – Stay at The Harmony Motel if you are a U2 fan!

Attention U2 Rock Band Fans.  Did you know that Joshua Tree, one of U2’s most famous albums, reflects in the heritage of the Harmony Motel, located in 29 Palms at the doorstep to Joshua Tree National Park? Well, now you know!

U2

In 2003, this motel was neglected and found its way to be listed on eBay!  Now owned by Ash and lovingly restored to the glamour of the 1950s complete with the restored motel signage which found its way on the original U2 band cover for the Joshua Tree album.

In December 1987, the band stopped and stayed at Harmony Motel while on a roadtrip through the California desert to take photos for its album cover.  According to the designer of the album sleeve, Steve Averill, the band wanted to capture the part of the United States where “nature and industrialization meet”. The Harmony Motel hosted The Band for an evening and room #4 was where the gang convened for meetings to plan their shoot.

If you stay at Harmony Motel in 29 Palms, you will be part of rock history.  Try and recreate the amazing album cover art and photography by visiting where U2 explored locally for the Joshua Tree album art and stay at our quaint, quirky, AND historic motel!  Book directly at www.harmonymotel.com.
