Attraction: Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail
This trail is outside the Joshua tree visitor center which had great displays and education about native critters and vegetation. This hike is so beautiful. There are a lot of ups and downs and it’s not easy but it’s quick. It only took us two hours at a moderate pace. You can also run it. Bring a walking stick.

Attraction: Theatre 29
Theatre 29 was formed in January of 2000 to bring quality family theater to the City of Twentynine Palms and the outlying community. Theatre 29 is also dedicated to promoting the participation of young people and people of all ages in the theater experience. Theatre 29 presents six major stage productions each year – musicals, dramas, and comedies – and an annual Haunted House event at Halloween. The Theatre 29 building, the John Calveri Memorial Theatre, is also used for occasional special performances, fund-raisers, and community events.

Visit the library’s “Book Oasis” with new and used books for sale in the lobby, and relax while you explore the library’s many resource sections and reading rooms. Also available (besides lending books!) are computers with Internet access, video rentals, periodicals, children’s area, and Summer Reading Programs. Preschool Storytime is every Thursday 11:00, Sept. to June. Don’t miss the Spring and Fall Book Sales by Friends of the Library.

Attraction: Old Schoolhouse Museum
Very nicely preserved old times schoolhouse which has been repurposed into a museum dedicated to telling the history of the area. It’s a good place to stop and get a feeling for the history of the area. The docent there seemed to enjoy talking to people as they came in. If you are in the area, it’s worth stopping by.

Attraction: Smith’s Ranch Drive-In Movie Theatre
One of the last American drive-in movie theaters, Smith’s Ranch Drive-In opened in 1954, although outdoor movies were screened at the historic Smith Ranch as early as 1940.  It has a capacity for 330 cars and shows first-run movies Thursday through Sunday nights. History: Bill Smith arrived in 1923 in his Model-T Ford and developed the haven known as Smith’s Ranch. Bill and his brother, Harry, drilled a well and provided water to homesteaders, and Bill’s shower, swimming pool, and shade trees were a welcome place to cool off on hot summer days. Bill married Thelma Mead in 1930, and the ambitious pioneer couple built an ice house, dairy, ice cream parlor, outdoor theater, and trailer park on their property, and a large recreation hall with partners Bill & Prudie Underhill.

This is a really nice campground that is clean and well maintained. There are plenty of rocks surrounding the campgrounds for little ones to climb on. The campsites are spacious with plenty of room for a tent and car.

Since the 1950s, the Marine base has grown from a few buildings, a glider runway, and about 120 Marines to the 932-square-mile military training complex you see today, with more than 19,000 Marines, sailors, family members, and civilian workers. It is currently the largest and fastest-growing Marine Corps training base in the world, now officially designated as the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms.
